Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions before you schedule?

How do I know which specialty applies to what I'm going through?

You don't need to have a clear label before reaching out. Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or unlike themselves without being able to name exactly what's happening — and part of our work together is making sense of that. Each specialty page offers a closer look at common symptoms, root causes, and patterns, so you can see what resonates. If more than one feels familiar, that's normal too — trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and relationship struggles often overlap and shape one another.

What's the difference between trauma, anxiety, and just feeling overwhelmed?

These often overlap and influence one another, which is why they can feel hard to tell apart. Anxiety typically shows up as constant worry, overthinking, or a sense of bracing for something bad to happen. Trauma is often the deeper layer underneath — painful or overwhelming experiences that continue affecting how safe, connected, or like yourself you feel today. Feeling overwhelmed can be a symptom of either, or simply the weight of carrying too much for too long. Therapy helps you understand which threads are shaping your story so we can address them with care.

I don't think what I've been through was "bad enough" for therapy. Is that true?

This is one of the most common reasons people delay reaching out — and one of the most important ones to gently challenge. If something still affects how you feel, sleep, relate, or move through your day, it matters. Therapy isn't reserved for the most extreme experiences; it's for anyone carrying pain, patterns, or a heaviness that's impacting their life.. You don't have to qualify your suffering to deserve support.

Can the same therapist treat multiple things at once?

Yes — and most of the time, that's exactly what's needed. The specialties on this site (trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and relationship issues) are deeply interconnected. Anxiety often has roots in trauma. Depression can grow out of grief. Relationship struggles frequently trace back to early attachment experiences. My approach is integrative by design, drawing from EMDR, IFS, EFT, attachment-focused, psychodynamic, and CBT frameworks — so we can address the full picture of what you're carrying, not just one piece of it.

What if I relate to more than one specialty?

That is often the case. Most people are navigating more than one challenge, and many concerns are deeply connected. You do not need to choose the “right” specialty before we begin. Together, we will focus on what feels most important and meaningful to you.

How much do sessions cost, and do you accept insurance?

Sessions are $135 for a 45-50 minute session, the same across every specialty. Bentley Counseling is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly — this allows treatment decisions to stay between us, with no mental health diagnosis on your permanent record and no session limits set by an insurance company. A superbill can be provided for out-of-network reimbursement if your plan offers it, and HSA and FSA cards are accepted. Reduced-fee sliding scale spots may also be available depending on need.
